Working primarily with oil on large-scale canvases and boards, she explores themes of femininity, womanhood, culture, and diaspora. Her multicultural upbringing and global experiences shape her work; with parents born in Nairobi and raised in the UK, Ambi herself lived in Hyderabad, Hong Kong, and England throughout her formative years. These cross-cultural influences have led her to focus on themes of identity, weaving together elements of her heritage with insights from the diverse places she has called home. A recurring motif in her work is the paisley ‘teardrop’ or ‘mango’ shape, a traditional symbol in Indian designs known as ‘Ambi.’ By subtly embedding this symbol in her compositions, Ambi reclaims it as a form of personal and cultural expression, transforming it from mere decoration into a meaningful exploration of identity. This motif carries added significance, as her name ‘Ambi’ is derived from ‘Amrit,’ meaning ‘holy water’ or ‘nectar’ - a nod to the idea of purity, an unfair feminine ideal rooted in religion which has hugely influenced art, literature, culture – everything. Ambi’s inspiration stems from her research into feminist themes in the context of her unique cultural and global experiences, researching how women have been depicted and perceived throughout history. Growing up in environments that often undervalued artistic pursuits in favour of academics, Ambi also seeks to champion the importance of art and creativity. Her work is a testament to the power of visual expression, shaped by her cultural heritage, upbringing, and gender. Inspired by the ceramics of Johnson Tsang and Wangechi Mutu’s collage, I created a painting that evokes the stereotypical femininity. This was also the very first introduction of the paisley symbol in my work. I was keen to create a common motif or mode of consistency in my work to make it easily distinguishable. This painting was a defining moment for me because it solidified my association with the paisley. It is a response to the cat call ‘you look prettier when you smile’ and addresses feminist issues about womanhood and femininity. The flowers are a key element of feminist art and are stylised to make them look surreal. The main focal point of the piece however, is the layered face. The larger part of the piece depicts a straight face, staring blankly towards the edge of the canvas. The face layered on top is painted to look like a ‘mask’ with a shadow cast onto the primary face and onto the flowers. It depicts a ‘forced smile’ put on by my friend Stephanie. The significance of it being layered as a mask demonstrates how women are forced to uphold a facade of being constantly happy or pretty due to the stereotypes we have been confined to. Stephanie and I look completely different and this therefore highlights the unnatural idea of layering her face onto my own. It is also symbolic of how almost every woman has experienced a situation where she has been told to ‘smile’ by a man. The lilies are spread around the face to emphasise the links between women and nature, being positive and life-giving, which highlights the power of womanhood. It illustrates the presentation of women as being constrained to one of two estremes, they are either deemed the pure, virginal, innocent ‘Madonna’ figure (far left) or they are the ‘Whore’ (far right)if they dont conform to this stereotype. In this tryptic, I was trying to represent the ‘grey area’ that isnt shown in art and literature. Where women are seen by men to only be able to conform to one of these two extremes, I am trying to show the true complexity behind a womans nature. ‘The Madonna’ <img width="1482" height="1446" width_o="1482" height_o="1446" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/f543ec000a8649fd2100f916f8f12c6668323b58fcb093331ac9cf593ec84de5/Screenshot-2023-09-07-at-1.20.54-PM.png" data-mid="190043085" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/f543ec000a8649fd2100f916f8f12c6668323b58fcb093331ac9cf593ec84de5/Screenshot-2023-09-07-at-1.20.54-PM.png" /> In contrast to the ‘madonna’ the ‘whore’ figure subverts the stereotype of women being passive by staring starkly at the viewer. The figures in the background, distorted and fragmented contrast those in the ‘madonna’ painting which seem almost idyllic. This was done to shut down the unrealistic body standards women are held to, being ‘too big’ or ‘too thin.’ Where the vase is smooth and clear in the ‘madonna painting’ in this, the vase is cracked - this was somehting I did to demonstrate how these contrasints have affected women over the centuries.‘The Grey Area’ <img width="1438" height="1444" width_o="1438" height_o="1444" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/61ec544e63e3955958d162956a80281079aae89919f96cd84999c697a3e742fe/Screenshot-2023-09-07-at-1.30.42-PM.png" data-mid="190044136" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/61ec544e63e3955958d162956a80281079aae89919f96cd84999c697a3e742fe/Screenshot-2023-09-07-at-1.30.42-PM.png" /> My inspiration behind the ‘madonna’ figure was actually similar to Baz Lurhmans interpretation of Daisy Buchanan in ‘The Great Gatsby.’ She is presented as the Madonna figure because she conforms to the stereotype of being pure and innocent, through imagery of white sheets, and flowing water for example. She ignores signs of her husbands affair because women were supposed to be passive and subservient. Through this, I have made the woman in the painting passively glance away, with an inclusion of a vase-like neck to demonstrate the stereotypical fragility of women. ‘The Whore’ <img width="1138" height="1116" width_o="1138" height_o="1116" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/2fd0f8d0c507b8e9dfe4745c2740dcefd30d6b380ea1d944c1c4837d8ba04caa/Screenshot-2023-09-07-at-1.26.29-PM.png" data-mid="190043580" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/2fd0f8d0c507b8e9dfe4745c2740dcefd30d6b380ea1d944c1c4837d8ba04caa/Screenshot-2023-09-07-at-1.26.29-PM.png" /> I was struggling to find a way to represent this ‘grey area’ that isnt represented in art and literatrure, so I started by just combining the two paintigns and seeing what would come of it. This last piece in the tryptic became an amalgamation of the two stereotypes and extremes women are conformed to, with the red lips for the ‘seductive’ ‘whore’ figure, and the pink representing the ‘madonna.’ I have included both a passive glance and a stark confrontational look and the final touch of gold alludes to the japanese art of kinsugi, where ceramics that were broken could be beautifuly fixed.
